San Rafael — Marin County’s largest city — is home to some of the county’s best architecture, food and nightlife. Two architectural highlights include the unforgettable Civic Center built in 1963 by Frank Loyd Wright, in addition to the Mission San Rafael.
Fourth street downtown offers lots of diversity in terms of cuisine and price range. Sol Food, one of the county’s most popular restaurants, serves some of the best Puerto Rican food around. Terrapin Crossroads, founded by Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, acts as a popular farm-to-table restaurant and music venue. There is a lively farmers’ market with entertainment and food offerings on Thursday nights in the Summer and Fall.
Unincorporated communities within San Rafael include Terra Linda, Santa Venetia, Marinwood, and Lucas Valley.
